We are starting a campaign to get all of the major companies to implement an in house recycling company. Many of them just dont know that it can be so easy and actually save them money!

Here is the proposal we are passing on to all major companies
the list will be compiled at the bottom of the page-

Dear ( company name)

Many consumers want to use post consumer recycled material as well as an eco-friendly biodegradable product which will not harm the environment. Why not start a program at each store where consumers can return there plastic bottles to you directly and get a “discount” redeemed like a “coupon” for each one returned as an incentive. You can then re-fill the bottles, re-label them and re-use them with your earth friendly product and give part of the proceeds to charity (preferably one that will help with the preservation of our planet) Voila instant in house RECYCLING PROGRAM.

This will not only save you money, but it will also avoid the continuous manufacturing and waste of the plastic bottles we do not need. To recycle these bottles they are wasting a large amount of water and get processed in a factory which puts out emissions, and use fuel. It is all unneccessary when we can do it locally and for much less.

You can be among the first to make a difference!

Please acknowledge iTeachMan for the idea as we are working hard to sustain life here for all mankind.

Diapers no matter how you look at them are not Biodegradable. Most of them are bleached, and the gel inside is dangerous for your child. You can however get certain brands that have “Gel Free” types, or Chlorine Free un-Bleached types, however they are still not Biodegradable.

The average person ends up spending 5 x’s more on disposable diapers a year then you would with the cloth ones… thats on the lower end.

Bio Plastics are starting to be seen all around. Well the ones to make an appearance have yet to be worth anything to me. Yes if they make it to a commercial composting plant with extreamly high heat they will break down, however this is unrealistic, and not the problem.

Oliver P. Peoples has wanted to prove two things: that he could reengineer plants to grow biodegradable plastic in their cells and that he could make a lot of money doing it- not as profit but as a whole. in Oil and other industries.

All these materials are green in the sense that they reduce dependence on fossil fuels. But while rival bioplastics must be incinerated or composted at high temperatures, Mirel will decompose if it is simply tossed in a home compost heap or dumped at sea. says “Mirel is the one that works in all environments,”Joseph P. Greene a professor in mechanical engineering and manufacturing at California State University at Chico, who was hired by the state to find the best bioplastic on the market. “It breaks down nicely with food or yard waste. Boom, 180 days later and it’s nice brown dirt.”

Total global production of bioplastics is still minuscule. All the manufacturers combined will generate only about 1million tons a year by 2010, analysts say, compared with 500million tons a year of the petro-based variety. But these ordinary plastics, which account for up to 10% of total U.S. oil consumption, are quickly becoming an extravagance at $138 for a barrel of crude. A switch to bioplastics not only would help reduce oil dependence but also could save companies and consumers serious money. With Dow Chemical hiking the price of its plastic products by up to 20% on June1, some types of bioplastics from Cereplast and others already cost less. If oil stays high, bioplastics could capture 20% of the global plastics market in as little as five years, predicts Jeff Bishop, an independent analyst at Beacon Equity Research in San Francisco. “It’s a no-brainer where customers are going to gravitate,” he says. John Pierce, DuPont’s head of biosciences, calls bioplastics “an opportunity we measure in the billions of dollars.”

on another note- A Plastic Pacific
Google “garbage island” and check out a growing ecological catastrophe called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Featured on CNN, it’s a “massive stew of unwanted waste” twice the size of Texas in a remote area of the Pacific, northeast of Hawaii. The fast-growing patch was discovered in 1997 by Captain Charles Moore, who founded the nonprofit Algalita Marine Research Foundation in Long Beach, Calif. He reckons bits of plastic now outnumber plankton in many parts of world’s seas

NOAA Study Shows Nitrous Oxide Now Top Ozone-Depleting Emission

Though the role of nitrous oxide in ozone depletion has been known for several decades, the new study is the first to explicitly calculate that role using the same measures that have been applied to CFCs, halons and other chlorine- and bromine-containing ozone-depleting substances.

In addition to soil fertilization, nitrous oxide is emitted from livestock manure, sewage treatment, combustion and certain other industrial processes. Dentists use it as a sedative (so-called “laughing gas”). In nature, bacteria in soil and the oceans break down nitrogen-containing compounds, releasing nitrous oxide. About one-third of global nitrous oxide emissions are from human activities. Nitrous oxide, like CFCs, is stable when emitted at ground level, but breaks down when it reaches the stratosphere to form other gases, called nitrogen oxides, that trigger ozone-destroying reactions.

Conserving water is just the beginning. It’s also important to calculate how much water you are actually using. That way, you’ll know how big your water footprint is and how you can balance it. Wanna crunch your numbers?
Now that children are back in school, and the menus are regulated by a strict guideline

( katsup is no longer considered a vegetable)

school age children have no excuse to have nutrition problems and hunger complaints. We have to focus on our communities, as well as globally. During this economic hardship, children should not be allowed to suffer when it comes to the necessities of life. I see to many obese parents complaining about how they have no money for groceries or spending there money on beer and ciggerettes when there are clearly more pressing matters at hand… the math does not work out and the only ones who feel the pain are the children.

Take the time to fill out the form, and get your child the free or reduced meals they deserve .

So we just realized what we are up against… We have to battle our own party of NO!

Nooooo… so the City of Crystal River Florida is ok with not having a Recycling Ordinance implemented in this city- I even presented a Soft Ordinance idea to them and it was still refused. “It …is a waste of resources and not a neccessary expense at this time, however we can offer additional trash containers.” AAAHHH! Am I the only one who sees the importance???

I am gonna have to call Ol’ Charlie Christ on this… yeah, like that will help but im gonna! Yea I am… 45 minutes north they have Mandated a Commercial Ordinance for Recycling and if you are caught tossing any recyclable in the trash- Watch out! The Recycling Enforcer will fine you a minimum $100 fine. If you continue to break the rules baby you will continue to pay these fines and then have to go before the judge.

San Francisco, California has the lovely residents Compost and recycle! That’s great! Lets take notes and pass them on secretly under the noses of the old school ” Theres no such thing as Green House Gasses” blind folk and try to help each other to help the planet to help us anyways

It takes alot of extra work but come on people… it is a good and worth while cause. If you can bitch about it, back it up. When you go out to an event, and there are no recycling containers, why not be the person there with your bin smiling and waving people over to collect there ( dare I say trash cause it isn’t) RECYCLABLES

Yes I’m dubbed the crazy environmentalist at the kids football games, and those are some crazy people… I like a challenge though.

Check out this link ^^^

San Francisco has implemented a MANDATORY COMPOST AND RECYCLE PROGRAM

Here in Florida I am fighting to get Recycling bins set up in a City Park! Below is an email corospondance ehich sadly shows the battle I am not losing… but struggling in.

This was sent to the secratery of the Div. of communty and Recreations. No one else would give me the time of day.

Debra,

I am contacting you regarding the lack of recycling bins. If you could put a

recycling bin by every trash can there may be less litter on the fields and

playgrounds. My son and I walk around in the evening during the week and

pick up at least a dozen plastic bottles and Styrofoam cups, and we recycle

them. I am honestly glad they don’t make it to the trash can, because there

is enough of a problem with plastics overfilling the landfills and they

don’t biodegrade. Signs encouraging people to recycle would be great as

well, but the bins would be fantastic in its self.

If you need to please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

Tia

-Mother of Jr. Pee Wee Shark football player

>>> Debra Burden 08/14/2009 12:23 PM >>>

Hello Tia,

I read over your email and concluded that adding recycling to the

ballfield(s) will likely be a challenging task. However, it is a good idea

for a great cause. Still, I am uncertain the best way to go about achieving

this goal. So let’s work through this together, okay. The first thing I

suggest we do is contact Recycling Coordinator Owen Carney. He can be

reached at 527-4692. I am also copying him on this email. I am wondering

what is entailed in having a recycling center located near the Bicentennial

Park. Possibly a league or leagues may want to sponsor to receive the

proceeds from the recycling.

Owen,

What can you tell us.

Sincerely,

Debra R. Burden

Senior Secretary

Division of Community and Recreational Programs

(352) 527-5750 direct

(352) 527-7676 fax

http://www.bocc.citrus.fl.us/

>>> Donna Yarborough 8/14/2009 11:43 AM >>>

Hey, Deb. The best bet is to have them contact Owen Carney here at SWM. His

number is 527-4692. He is our Recycling Coordinator and will be able to

answer all of their questions. If he doesn’t answer, tell them to leave a

message on his voice mail. He is very good about returning calls and I’m

sure he will be able to assist them. Find a house yet?

>>> Debra Burden 08/14/2009 11:38 AM >>>

Hey Donna,

We received interest in starting a recycling program at our three major

ballfields. They do produce a great deal of recyclable waste. I read over

the SWM site a bit. I see reference to sponsoring organizations receiving

proceeds from recycling. Who is the best person to refer a citizen to that

Hi Debra,

We are definitely interested in a conversation regarding placing

recycling centers at the ballfield(s). First, we would need an area at least

60′ x 60′ which would be an area dedicated to recycling. This area would

have to have a hard surface (concrete is best as asphalt can be beaten up

pretty badly by servicing the rolloff containers.) This would allow for four

containers (plastics, newspaper, cardboard and one container for glass and

aluminum & steel cans.)

Newspaper and old corrugated cardboard are what have the greatest

potential for making revenue for any sponsoring group.

Sponsoring groups are 501-3-c non-profit groups. Currently we have

Scout troops, Church groups, Civic Associations and volunteer fire

companies. The sponsoring groups are required to “lay eyes on” the site once

per day, and remedy any litter, or other unsightly situations at the site.

We will take care of any large items illegally dumped at the sites (couches,

refrigerators, etc.) but smaller items are the responsibility of the groups.

In return for maintaining the site, the sponsoring group receives 80% of the

proceeds from the sale of the recyclables, and checks are issued monthly.

Those are pretty much capsule comments about the recycling centers.

I’ll be more than happy to discuss this with you further at your

convenience. My extension is 4692, or 527-7670. Look forward to discussing

this further with you.

Debra,

I was looking at the park, and the only place where I feel the containers

would really be visible is near the skate boarding area(to the right when

you first pull in) however I could not find any area which is 60′ x 60′, I

don’t believe the recycling area off of hwy 44 isn’t that large. I

initially was thinking on a smaller scale of trash can/ plastic can/

aluminum cans/ all in the same area- perhaps as a cluster or in a line,

clearly labeled as well so when the patrons go to toss there waste, they

have the options to separate them on the spot. Like they do at the larger

parks. Don’t get me wrong, If we are able to get anything then I am

grateful. I will continue to look for areas which may accommodate the larger

bins,

Thank you again for your support on this matter and I look forward to

Good Morning,

Okay, this sounds like it may be quite the undertaking. I am copying my

supervisor. I need his input and approval. In the meantime…

Tia, I believe an onsite recycling center would be necessary in order to

place the smaller recycling bins on site. Otherwise, the maintenance

workers would have no place to empty the cans routinely. Anyone know if

this is so?

A couple of things come to mind after reading Owen’s email:

1. Owen, does the recycling center HAVE TO BE sponsored? I don’t believe

the leagues are non-profit.

2. Owen, can we opt to only have two recycling bins — aluminum and plastic?

Three reasons:

First, the fields primarily produce this waste.

Second, we do not want to draw additional traffic into the park. We

simply want to be environmentally conscious of the waste happening.

Third, fewer recycling containers may require less space.

3. The placement of recycling containers will require permitting.

I appreciate your input.

Well, the Sharks are a non-profit, but I’m not sure if it really needs to be

a large scale, sponsored thing either. Shouldn’t it be a community effort to

keep the park clean and to take the additional measures to help to encourage

Recycling? This should not be such a difficult system to implement. Many

cities have made it a mandatory thing and that is for a reason. I agree with

the second note, not only the public factor, but isn’t glass prohibited from

public parks for safety reasons?

Would it be difficult to have the bins emptied bi-weekly (or as needed) and

taken to a recycling station? Plastic and aluminum aren’t heavy. Pay for my

gas and I will do it

Another thought- Who is the garbage company that comes to the local parks?

They may offer a service themselves. This could be another avenue.

Tia

Hello Tia,

Well I spoke with my manager this morning. As I suspected, recycling has previously been attempted in our parks. Apparently, the required concrete space, and increased maintenance cost such as exterminator fees and the likeliness of unwanted dumping made the idea prohibitive.

Have you spoken with your league to organize a small-scale recycling program amongst the teams? With some inner-league coordination someone could drop it off at a recycling center at the days end. There is a recycling center at: 7490 Gulf-to-Lake Hwy, Crystal River. Also, I believe the City of Crystal River has a recycling program. They probably have a closer location available to offer.

I wish that I had better suggestions and/or solutions to offer. This is frustrating for me as well. For today I will start with requesting additional trash dispensers. Should I request one, two, or do you have a suggestion?

Okay, I can request additional trash containers. I can also laminate a recycling symbol with velcro on the back that can be removed when you leave the park. Are you or a teammate going to be responsible for getting the contents collected (while you are there) to the recycling center? Otherwise, it will just be disposed of in trash bins. Yes?
